DIZZY GILLESPIE


  • Afro-Cuban Jazz music began in the late 1940's
  • this combined Afro-Latin music and Jazz
  • Dizzy became interested in this music after meeting cuban percussionist Chano Pozo in 1947 
  • Chano played the congas in Gillespie's band 
  • Mateca became a popular bebop song in the Afro-Cuban Style
  • In his later years Dizzy had many adventures, including running for President of the United States in 1964
  • In the 1980's he was conductor of the  United Nations Orchestra, which toured the world.
  • He appeared on TV on shows like The Cosby Show, The Muppet Show, and Sesame Street.
  • In 1989 he gave over 300 performances in 27 countries, including 100 U.S. Cities and 31 states.
  • He held over 14 honoray doctoral degrees, and won awards such as the Grammy Lifetime Acheivement Award, the Kennedy Center Honor, the A.S.C.A.P. Duke Ellington Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • He appeared on the stage of Carnegie Hall over 33 times.
  • A longtime resident of Englewood, NJ Dizzy passed away on January 6, 1993 at the age of 75.
