Glenn Miller put together his first band in 1937, but the band was a failure. It sounded like many of the other big bands of the time. Feeling discouraged, Miller moved back to New York City in 1938 to form a new band.

To make his band sound different, Miller decided to change his Saxophone Section. Most saxophone section's used 5 members: 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, and 1 Baritone Saxophone. Miller decided to have one of his saxophonist play Clarinet to change the sound of his band, and it worked!

In September of 1938, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was signed to RCA Victor Records, and started to become more popular.

from 1939 to 1942 the Miller Orcehstra was feature 3 times a week on CBS Radio.

In February of 1942 he received a Gold Record for his song "Chatanooga Choo-Choo".

In 1939, TIME magazine said: "Of the twelve to 24 discs in each of today's 300,000 U.S. jukeboxes, from two to six are usually Glenn Miller's."
