  • Lived from 1904-1984
  • Though he wanted to be a drummer when he was a boy, he would switch to piano when he was 15 years old
  • Count Basie would go on to become one of the most famous band leaders during the swing jazz era
  • After having some early success playing in New Jersey and New York, Basie moved to Kansas City, MO where he would eventually lead his first band
