DUKE ELLINGTON

  • Sometimes Duke Ellington had help when composing songs for his band.  He used a Co-Writer named Billy Strayhorn to write some of his biggest hits (like "Take the A Train")
  • His popularity in the United States allowed him to tour Europe in 1931
  • Duke Ellington had many famous guest musicians in his band, including many of the popular singers of the 1940's and 1950's.  One of his most important guest singers was Ella Fitzgerald.
  • Duke constantly changed his music to remain popular.  His most popular decades were the 1940's and 1950's when swing jazz was the most popular style of music in the country.
