  • As a child he disliked piano lessons, he prefered to play baseball
  • began playing the piano again as a teenager, and became a professional musician at the age of 18
  • became a the leader of a big band at the age of 24, and named his first band The Washingtonians
  • he bacame very popular and decided to move to New York City to become more successful
  • started playing popular night clubs around the city, and also started to be known as a great composer
  • he became so popular that his band started playing weekly at the famous Cotton Club
