  • born Edward Kennedy Ellington
  • Ellington’s childhood friends noticed that "his casual, offhand manner, his easy grace, and his dapper dress gave him the bearing of a young nobleman", and began calling him Duke
  • lived from 1899 – 1974
  • was born in Washington, D.C.
  • mostly known musically for playing the piano and being a band leader
  • was a master Jazz musician, but prefered that his music be called American Music
