  • youngest of 9 children
  • learned piano by the age of 4 and taught himself the trombone and trumpet by age 12
  • married wife Lorraine Gillespie in 1940, and remained married to her until his death in 1993
  •  1939, joined the  Cab Calloway Orchestra until a dispute caused him to leave 
 
 
  • 1942, joined the Ella Fitzgerald Orchestra and stayed there until he decided to go off on his own
 
 
 
 
  • 1945, started his first combo with Alto Saxophone player Charlie "Bird" Parker
